Optimizing blood for life

Our unique medical technology specifically reduces blood group antibodies and autoantibodies in the blood – enabling transplants across the blood group barrier, universal blood components and new treatments for autoimmune disease.

Transplantation

More transplants – across the blood group barrier

One factor that keeps the number of transplants down is the limited availability of donated organs. Glycosorb® ABO specifically removes the antibodies that react to a foreign blood group, so organ transplants can be done over the blood group barrier – and close relatives can more easily donate a kidney regardless of blood type.

Statistically, 35 percent of suitable donors and recipients are blood group incompatible. In Sweden and Germany, which have the longest experience with Glycosorb® ABO, more than 20 percent of all kidney transplants from living donors are blood group incompatible.

The Glycosorb ABO column

Transplantation

Glycosorb® ABO

A single-use medical device that specifically reduces anti-A/B antibodies in the recipient’s plasma – without significantly affecting other antibodies or blood proteins. Used for adults and children, and compatible with today’s dialysis equipment.

Transfusion medicine

Glycosorb® ABO 4 ml

A CE-marked variant for transfusion clinics and blood centres. It specifically reduces anti-A/B antibodies in donor plasma, increasing the availability of universal blood components that can be given regardless of blood group.

How Glycosorb® ABO works

Specific, gentle and suited to existing hospital routines

The product is based on biologically active carbohydrates – effective and non-toxic biological substances found on proteins, cells and tissues in the body.

01

Matched to the blood groups

The Glycosorb® A, B or A/B column is chosen depending on the blood group of the donor and the recipient.

02

Antibodies selectively removed

The recipient’s plasma is treated continuously until the antibodies reacting to the foreign blood group are selectively removed. A treatment takes one to five hours depending on the patient’s weight.

03

No new equipment needed

Normally one to three treatments are performed before transplantation. A new single-use column is used for each treatment, and it is compatible with today’s dialysis equipment.

Clinical results

Results equivalent to blood group compatible transplants

Independent studies from different countries show excellent results, also over longer follow-up periods – equivalent to blood group compatible kidney transplants from living related donors. The results have been presented at international transplantation congresses and in more than 60 scientific articles.

In Sweden, more than 200 ABO-incompatible kidney transplants from living donors were performed 2001–2012 with results at least as good as ABO-compatible transplants (Läkartidningen, 2012).

Innovation

The same platform, new possibilities in autoimmune disease

Glycorex has unique knowledge in biologically active carbohydrates and extracorporeal blood therapy – treatment of the blood outside the patient’s body. All development projects build on the company’s own technology platform.

Main focus

Rheumatoid arthritis

Developed with a leading European research institute to reduce RA-associated autoantibodies. In vitro results are very promising, and preparations for a clinical study are the next step.

Myasthenia gravis

A full-scale column has effectively eliminated the specific autoantibodies in plasma from MG patients in in vitro trials, with no detected impact on other antibodies or blood components.
